A Friend InDeed,Inc over the years have extended its philanthropic efforts in various areas. Initially following a trip to Ghana, the founder Angela Henry Todd was reminded of the similarities in social structures thus returning to her roots.
A Christmas Assistance was started at St. Anne’s Church with the then Pastor, Fr. Peter McIsaac and Ethel Carpenter Johnson both being instrumental in organizing, wrapping donated Christmas gifts for the children in the church community in Western Kingston.
Reading materials were also extended to the 4th grades to improve their reading abilities.
Simultaneously the organization noted that there were other issues at Convent of Mercy Academy, Alpha that they could contribute towards improvements. Over the past several years with the assistance of Chelsea Todd, Jean Marie Golding, George Bell and the late Maureen HoSang Blake we were able to organize book bags and school shoes deliveries. Most recently during the Covid pandemic we were also able to contribute tablets and Data plans to assist in the remote learning.
We hope to continue developing sustainable projects that can be productive.
In 2022, a sizable donation was made to support the purchase of new desks for the entering first-year class at CMA, Alpha.
That same year, Maureen HoSang Blake, Class of ’74, passed away. In memory of the remarkable woman she became—a culinary expert whose talents were shaped by the Home Economics Department at the Academy—we contributed to the complete renovation of the Cooking Area, along with meaningful upgrades to the Sewing Area.
Most recently, as part of our continued holistic approach to supporting the institution, we have expanded our efforts to include the Math Intervention Program. This contribution extends beyond financial support and now includes mentoring by former students, ensuring that our investment enriches both the academic environment and the personal growth of current scholars.
Emergencies:
In response to the recent devastation in Jamaica caused by Hurricane Melissa, our organization has contributed to larger relief efforts through targeted donations. Additionally, we have adopted a small community in Westmoreland, where we have provided direct emergency supplies to support immediate needs.
Our ongoing commitment includes collaborating with a partner team to rebuild and restore the basic and elementary schools in the community, ensuring that children can return to a safe and supportive learning environment.
